Coin Point Challenge
After the meeting got going, Karen jumped up to tell us all the results of the Coin Point Challenge for 2005. There were 27 participants in the Challenge this year (I think). It would be great if every member of the club participated, so that we could get a better feel for how much treasure is found in a year. Still, there were at least 50% of the members and I think most of the real active hunters were involved!
Here are some of the highlights. The Numero Uno Scavenger for the year was Clay Soliday. He managed to amass 15,337.25 points. Karen was pretty close with 11,586.75 points. John Smith won the intermediate division with 9,4446.5 points, followed by Steve Burris. Yours truly, Duncan Bell was the top Amateur hunter with 4,961 points. Jon Skimming was the Novice hunter of the year (Yeah right, he finds more good stuff than a lot of us-just not coins!)
As you can expect, Clay led the way in almost every category. So, I?m leaving his name out! Here are the leaders for the categories he didn?t win. Karen found the most dimes-737. John Smith found the most halves (24) and dollars (61). Karen also found the most $2 coins.
John found the most silver dollars at 18 (out of 27). He also found the most silver halves (14 out of 25).
Steve Burris tied with John for the most silver quarters with 11 each (out of 44 total). Clay found 24 silver dimes out of 124 for most silver dimes. John found the most war nickels too. Clay found the most Buffalos and the most V?s. Packrat snuck in there and found the most wheats (261 out of 825). Clay found the most older than wheat pennies.
Duncan tied with Clay for the most gold jewelry (6 each). Clay dominated the other two types of jewelry finds. John Smith found the most keys at 115. Packrat found the most arcade tokens-29. Clay found the most other types of tokens-9 bus and 11 good fors. John Smith found the most pins-29. Jon Skimming and Steve Warren went crazy on pull tabs finding 1,866 between them.
Janice Burris tied with Mark Gruner for the most paper money found-$20 each. Clay had the most toys and Scout items. Lucy Bowen was the queen of foreign coins with 100 out of 256.
Altogether, these 27 hunters found 28,635.5 coins. Shirley found a half of a penny-go figure! The total dollar value of the coins was $2,360.10 ? ! If you figure (conservatively) each gold item at $50, each silver item at $5, old coins at $1 apiece, good for tokens at $10 each, and add in the paper money, I think we came up with about $5300 total. That?s really conservative and doesn?t include any of the other relics, collectibles, etc!!!!
